Recommended in the first century by the naturalist Pliny, and the physician Dioscorides, St. John´s Wort has a long and varied history of use by the Romans and Greeks. In addition to its health benefits, St. John´s Wort was also believed to be a protector against evil. Early colonist introduced the plant into North America but found the Indians using the native American herb in much the same Old World plant. Today, St. John´s Wort is enjoying renewed interest by both herbalists and researchers.
